Pike School History
Documents researched and graciously provided by Mary Whitcomb. August - 2007

Pike Township School opened it's doors in the Fall of 1938 and closed in 1987 because of declining enrollment. Prior to 1938 there were six one-room schools, (previously 7 but one burned). They closed in 1938 sending the students to Pike Center, aka Pike Township School. The first one-room school in Pike Township was near Winameg and established in 1835.

The status of the school is that in 1987 the school board sold the school back to Pike Township for $1.00. A private individual purchased the school from the township for $26,000 with the intention of converting the facility to apartments. However, the county required that asbestos be removed from the piping. That work required additional funding and the bank declined the any additional loans for the building. The facility now stands vacant with no future plans.
